Maker: M. THOMAS
Origin: CARNARVON, WALES
Carnarvon is a coastal town in NW WALES.
This is an early Welch oak longcase with a very handsome case. There are reeded quarter columns in the trunk and wavy carving to the top of the long door. The original fancy brass escutcheon adds to its heritage. There is a raised panel in the plynth.
The bonnet or 'hood' to the case has the broken arched
pediment and carved wooden roundels.
One brass finial sits majestically on top.
The oak in this case tends to be thicker than most english
longcases. Something that I have noticed in other Welch longcases we have
had.

The brass eight day movement is with anchor escapement,
four pillars and rack and snail striking
mechanism. It has been recently cleaned and runs well.
It strikes the hours on a cast bell.
The two lead weights have three letters OBM struck in
them and the same is embellished on the inside of the trunk door.

The dial is superb! There are gilt scroll spandrels in
the corners and dolphins surrounding the silvered boss. The boss is engraved,
' M .Thomas , Carnarvon'
The makers name and place of origin are engraved in this
boss in the arch of the dial.
In the centre of the silvered chapter ring are the calendar
dial and the 'seconds bit' dial.
Well executed engraving dominates this dial.
One of the nicest oak longcases we have had.
